Atlantic crossing 18.5 - Putting the shoes back on

Grenada - 18/03/18

Of all the amazing, hard, sunny, wet, sweaty, windy days that I enjoyed in the past two Caribbean months, today is the saddest.
Not because I'm leaving: everything has to end, and not all ends are for good. But because today, after three months of bare feet and flip-flops, I wore shoes again...
I'm in Grenada's airport now, with a view over the Caribbean sea. My feet are boiling and my head hurts from brain freeze, thanks to a coffee frappè.

Nights at sea - Atlantic Crossing 18.4

We left El Hierro with the new moon, the first nights were dark, windy and relatively cold. The sky above Cirrus was magical, full of stars. At the beginning of the night we were running to catch up with summer constellations, always too fast for us and fading in the horizon. Then Taurus and Orion would rise in our stern, catch up with us, and show us the way towards the west. The red eye, Aldebaran, was showing the exact heading to Guadeloupe.
In these dark nights, the sea would catch fire. Our wake was alive, full of green light, and the breaking waves were loud, scary, but beautifully green with bioluminescent plankton. On the third night at sea we were even visited by a pod of dolphins, playing around us, only their green shadows visible.
There is no way to convey this with a picture, I'm sorry, but you will know when you will try it. I was skeptical, before leaving, about the beauty and variety of an ocean. I thought it could have even been boring, monotonous. I was very happy to be proven wrong.

Ain't a sailor anymore - Atlantic crossing 18.3

Le Marin - Martinique 20/01/18

Here I am, 5 days into the new chapter of this Atlantic experience. Le Marin, the harbour where I'm staying now with the new boat on which I'm working, is not really a nice place. An enclosed bay, sheltered from the wind and packed with hundreds of boats of all type.
But the job is interesting, quite different from what I have ever done. Could be monotonous after a while, I guess, but also meditative in a strange way. Less sailing, more sweating, less drinking, more wiping, less helming, more scrubbing.
Yesterday I've had the chance to do a night trip to the other side of the island, together with some people of my age that I met at the bar. Getting out of Le Marin was good, and in Le Vauclin we found a nicer atmosphere, with a nice Caribbean feel, and much more integration between the Creoles and the Europeans.

Bye Cirrus - Atlantic crossing 18.2

Guadeloupe - 15/01/2018

After a few days of relax in Marie Galante, it is now time to start the next step, a new experience. Yesterday I said farewell to Cirrus and it's crew and I am now in my new floating home.
Soon I'll try to tell you a bit more about the crossing itself. But in the meantime I'll leave you with a song

Landfall - Atlantic crossing 18.1

10/1/18 St. Louis, Marie-Galante
Land appeared initially only as a flashing light in the cloudy morning horizon, simple and unassuming. And yet, it was the other side of the Ocean!

On y va! - Atlantic crossing 17.10

21/12/17 - Islas Canarias
Winter solstice. The sun starts going north again, and finally we go west. Since many people like symbology, this is the best day for departure.
Ahead just a clean liquid sheet. The route is set but fluid, no tracks in front of us, and none will be left behind.

You can rest assured that next time we'll have ourselves a laugh'

- Atlantic crossing 17.9

20/12/17 El Hierro

Don't worry mum, we are doing something that is relatively safe! On the other hand, docked near us in La Restinga there is Therry...he has crossed the Atlantic 21 times by sail, and this time he is doing it sculling!!

Cirrus - Atlantic crossing 17.8

19/12/17 La Restinga - El Hierro
Cirrus is Rocio's and Gaspar's home, and he will bring them across two oceans, all the way to New Zealand.
He is small, only 9.5 meters, and his hull is made in aluminum. As far as I know he has crossed this ocean already twice, so if we treat him well he will safely bring us to the Caribbean. For now we have only managed to load every little space of it's body with food and gear...but even with this additional weight, he feels very nimble. He is ready to go!
'La nave è fulmine, torpedine, miccia, scintillante bellezza, fosforo e fantasia,
molecole d'acciaio, pistone, rabbia, guerra lampo e poesia.'

Clandestino - Atlantic crossing 17.7

18/12/17 La Restinga - El Hierro
We are cruisers, we enjoy the sea, we are spoiled. You can track us, talk to us. We know where we are going, even if often we don't know why. We have fancy gear, plenty of water and food...
Today, instead, while we were swiftly covering the 65 miles from La Palma to El Hierro with 25-30 knots of wind from the NE and 2.5 meters of wave, the spanish Coast Guard was looking for a wooden boat without engine and with 70 people on board, adrift between Africa and the Canaries.
We want a globalized world? Then we should accept that we are all part of it, and we are all responsible if lives are lost at sea in the attempt for achieving a better job, or medical care, or safety from wars.
Looking in awe at those steep waves, today, I knew that someone was looking at them with terror. I am part of the problem, I want to be a seed in the solution.

E vado vía, vado vía - Atlantic crossing 17.6

17/12/17 - La Palma
As you can see from the picture, La Palma has become too cold for us. Even car tires are frozen and are wearing scarves. So tomorrow before sunrise we will start heading south, bound to El Hierro.
For this short trip (65 miles) and for the whole Atlantic crossing you will be able to follow us here. Keep one eye on us, and say hi once in a while!

Someone to lava - Atlantic crossing 17.5

After having a full day of provisioning and boat chores yesterday, we took today as a way to say farewell to La Palma.
Waking up early to catch the first bus towards El Paso, we hiked 'la ruta de los volcanes', a 24 km long route over the southern ridge of the island (La Palma).
Main themes of the day where: shrooms gathering (Gaspar), pictures (Matteo), withRocio keeping a caring eye on us.
Apart from bring immersed in the clouds for most of the day (with even some rain towards the end), we enjoyed the trek over the lava, around old craters and through silent forests.
Our shoes are now in a bucket full of soapy water, to clean up the dust ( and the smell) and we are all in our bunks.

I have a dream I hope will come true
That you're here with me and I'm here with you
I wish that the earth, sea, the sky up above-a
Will send me someone to lava

The suitcase game - Atlantic crossing 17.2

14/12/17 Tenerife
I do this game with my family, generally when we are on long car trips, or during night shifts while sailing, which is called the suitcase game. Taking turns everyone states what he or she would put in a suitcase to go at a predefined place. The following player repeats what has just bin put in the suitcase, and adds something...this goes on with every player, remembering each time all the items that have been already mentioned, all in the right order. The game ends when someone does not remember the items anymore (and trust me, it could go on forever).
Today I played alone, trying to remember everything that I am bringing on this Atlantic crossing.
I am bringing two backpacks in my trip across the Atlantic. In them I have:
my foul weather clothes, trekking shoes, sailing shoes, sailing boots, a pair of woolly socks, a pair of trekking socks, a pair of long pants, 3 pairs of shorts pants, 2 bermudas, 2 speedos, 6 pairs of undies (plus 1 for New year's), 3 t-shirts, a polo shirt, 2 shirts, a tie for Christmas, a green jumper, a blue fleece, a baselayer, a fleece neck cover, a woolly hat, a pair of thin woolly gloves, a pair of sailing gloves, a hat for the sun, a light towel, a robe, and a small towel, 3 headlamps, of which two with their chargers, a sewing kit that my mum made for me, 2 handkerchiefs, 5 chocolate bars, some chewing gum and candies from my friend Jack, 2 liters of freshly pressed olive oil, 2 salamis, 3 pieces of rope of different length and thickness, 1 duck tape, 4 electrical tapes, 1 screwdriver with 20 long screwbits and 5 short ones, my Leatherman with some spare bits, a piece of rope and a whistle to tie it down, first aid kit with scissors, tweezers, wound cloth, bandages, plasters, tape, thermal cover, ibuprofen, antiseptic cream, betadine, paracetamol, antibiotic cream and pills, cortisone cream and pills, anti-nausea, Imodium, plasil, vitamins, sunblock, arnica cream, condoms, cellphone with charger and 2. Pairs of headphones, watch with charger, laptop with charger and plug converter, 4 USB sticks, 1 with documents and 3 with music and movies, a wallet with driver's license, bank card, health insurance card, some cash, a folder with 2 passports, SSN, a medical certificate, STCW certificates, a letter from Santa Claus to be opened only on Christmas day at local noon, a sextant with nautical almanacs, a book on celestial navigation, a book for stars' ID, a compass, sunglasses with their cover and cloth, snorkel, goggles and antifogging liquid, ukulele with a book about blues theory and excerxises, new strings, 2 pens, 2 pencils, an eraser, 3 notebooks, inflatable lifejacket with spare activation and CO2 canister, climbing harness, a wind jacket, sleeping bag and sheet, toothbrush and a couple of good reasons to come back.

Hi all, I am sorry for the English speaking readers, but this is an Italian matter regarding a referendum that will take place on Sunday 17th of April, so I will write in Italian.

source

Bisognerebbe quindi installare 500 GWh all'anno per 10 anni.
(https://www.wind-watch.org/faq-output.php)
https://it.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Produzione_di_energia_elettrica_in_Italia

Sotonopoly, 19th of December, 2pm at the Cowherds

What is the shortest route through 30 checkpoints! Have you considered the crowd of Christmas shoppers, the fizzy December air, a bit of Atlantic wind and there you have it: this is the perfect recipe for Sotonopoly, the race in which each cyclist becomes a capitalist to take over the whole city!

It has been two years since last edition, won by (Dr.) Charlie Main and Alessandro Mozzato with 84 points and 13 points lead over the runner up. There is plenty of room for improvement, though, as they only managed to complete 60% of the course before the time was up. Do you think that you can do better? Have you prepared you bike? Have you studied the maps? Have you been waking up the muscles from the autumn stillness? Are you ready to burn some calories in order to make space for next week’s food craze?

I hope to see you all on Saturday (19th of December) at 2pm at the Cowherds for race registration, final bike checks and a legs-warming pint. Remember to bring
- a bicycle
- a helmet
- bicycle lights
- a map of the city and the surrounding area (as detailed as possible)
- 5£ for entry
- some sort of digital camera (your cell phone will do the job, if it has a camera).

After the race we will convene at The Alexandra Beer Emporium (6 Bellvue Road SO15 2AY) to celebrate, stay dry, have some drinks and give out the prizes (at 7pm)! The evening will continue with a DJ set from 9pm so tell all your non-racing friends to come along!!

Not in my name

Earthrise - Taken by Apollo 8 crewmember Bill Anders on December 24, 1968

Last Friday I was out at a salsa lesson with my friends when the attacks in Paris happened. Initially I
felt helpless, like last month after the attacks in Ankara at the peace demonstration. Than I felt anxiety, because I realized how many people that I know live in Paris, and started stalking all of them on social media. Yes, cultural and geographic vicinity affected my reaction, and for a while I felt really bad about it. Now that a week has passed, though, I feel a much heavier uneasiness: what the hell is going on? Why are we letting our governments speak about war so easily? Do you remember all the peace rallies that we did in 2001 and 2003-2004? I was 12 and I did not go, but I remember reading on the newspapers many disgusted comments to the Western reaction to terrorism. Millions of people across the world flooded the streets to say NO to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

What is different now? Why are we letting ourselves be tricked? Is it because those peace marches did not have any practical effect? Those wars started anyways, and we are still experiencing the consequences... Is it because this declaration of war was only symbolic? Effectively we were already at war, we were already training militias, we were already funding drone missions... Is it because Paris itself was hit? Are we so hypocritical? Why are we reacting to this by singing the French National Anthem, which talks about slaying wives and children of the enemy? Do we really think this whole national/european/western unity attitude is going to stop religious fundamentalism? Why can't we see that, in other culture's eyes, we have been and are the terrorists on every conceivable aspect?

How can we pretend that the oppressed Muslims of Africa and Middle East overthrow their bloodthirsty oligarchies, if we can't even show them that we fight against our own capitalist and imperialist system? We are oppressed, they are oppressed, and we are all fighting against the wrong enemy. Our governments are happy, because a couple of videos of French kids interviewed in front of flowers and candles are enough to quench our daily need for peace and positive feelings. We share on social media breathtaking open letters by the survivors of Bataclan, that make us feel pacifists. We play "Imagine" on loop, in all sorts of different versions. We are more aware of the daily suicide bombings that happen a bit everywhere...

Then we go back to our workplaces, fighting with our peers for the crumbles; complaining about the mirants that make the line at the hospital a bit longer, or about the excessive heat, excessive cold, excessive drought or excessive rain, while we eat a tasteless banana from across the ocean...

I don't want my world to be like this

It doesn't matter how safe you are...

...it only takes an idiot driver, and you are done!

Yesterday I almost died: I was cycling on a straight stretch of road, slightly uphill, at night. I had my lights on. A driver overtook me only to hit a  traffic island just 5 or 6 meters in from of me. Obviously he swerved to the left and I was able to slow down enough only because I was going uphill.

He broke his front-right rim and suspension, but what would have happened to me if I was just a bit further ahead? Do you think he apologized? Or do you think that he blamed me for going too slow, forcing him to overtake me?

Cars in cities are weapons! Stay safe and look out for idiots!

The road to ECMC 4: all packed up and ready to go

It's time for packing up: tomorrow I'll be flying to Milan!

Gelatina, my bike, has flied already once to come here in the UK, so she knows what is going on. In fact, I felt that she was a bit excited today on my daily commute, knowing that tomorrow she will be riding in Italy!

I think I got everything I need; probably even too many tools, but I prefer being safe than sorry as the headset is still wobbling a bit... I'm even bringing a spare cog, but this is because I'm crazy!

Tomorrow at this time I'll be having an aperitivo with my sister and my dear friends Camilla and Michele, planning summer holidays and enjoying the pre-race excitement. I can't wait!!
